We get a 1/2 cow each year from a local farmer and get it diced up into many different shapes. That beef lasts us about a year. We keep the beef in a deep freezer in our basement. Because of the value of the beef we need to ensure that the freezer is always working.
This is where the temperature probe came in clutch. I have it setup with Home Assistant with alarms and messages sent when the temperature is out of range for 20 minutes.
We had picked up our 1/2 cow the previous month. Over $1,500 worth of beef.
One Sunday afternoon the alarm goes off both on the sensor and my phone. The temperature has been out of range for no apparent reason. I go down to the basement check everything out. I find that the compressor isn’t turning on and cooling the freezer.
We had enough time to run to the closest big box store that had a similar sized deep freezer. We purchased it and got it down in the basement with more than enough time to save over $1,500 in frozen beef.
I now have 2 temperature sensors now. One for the deep freezer and one in our standard refrigerator/ freezer. This sensor is well worth it!
