Our First ESPHome Starter Kit Showcase: Make Your LED Module Do Something
It is time for our first official ESPHome Starter Kit showcase.
The idea is straightforward. Make your LED and Buzzer module do something, anything at all, and share it with us. A doorbell. A meeting light so nobody walks in on your call. A trash night reminder. Whatever you come up with.
Ten programmable RGB LEDs and a piezo buzzer sitting in the shape of the ESPHome logo can cover a lot of ground, and we want to see what people have actually built with theirs.
What to build
There is no wrong answer here. Some starting points if you want them:
- A doorbell that lights up and chimes when someone is at the door
- A meeting light that goes red when your calendar says you are busy
- A trash night reminder that nags you on the right evening
- A laundry or dishwasher alert for the cycle you always forget
- A weather indicator that changes color when rain is coming
- A notification light for anything in Home Assistant worth noticing
- Something nobody has thought of yet, which is the entry we are most hoping to see
Small and clever counts as much as big and complicated. A build that solves one annoyance in your house is exactly the point.
How to enter
Reply to our forum post with three things:
- A photo or a video of it working
- Your YAML
- A short description of what it does
That is the whole entry. Sharing the YAML matters, because the best part of a showcase like this is everyone else being able to build on what you made.
What you can win
Every entry goes on the wheel. The winner picks their prize:
- A $40 Apollo gift card
- Or a custom Apollo Automation Owala water bottle
Dates
- Entries close Wednesday, September 30 at 11pm EST
- We spin the wheel and announce the winner Monday, October 5 at 8pm EST
Guidelines
- One entry per person
- Your build has to use the Starter Kit LED module
- Include a photo or video, your YAML, and a short description
- Winner is picked at random with wheelofnames.com
- Water bottle option ships US only
New to this, or not sure your project is good enough
It is. That is the honest answer.
If you are still learning, our wiki has tutorials that walk you through the LED and buzzer module from the first connection through full automations, and it explains the reasoning behind each step rather than only what to click. Plenty of good entries will come from people who followed a guide and then changed one thing to fit their house. That is how most of us learned.
