The Zooz Motion Dimmer ZEN12 800LR is in stock now at $31.95, down from $49.95. It puts three devices into one wall switch: a full Z-Wave dimmer, a motion sensor, and an ambient light sensor.

Three devices in one switch

The usual way to get motion-activated lighting is to install a smart switch, add a separate motion sensor somewhere in the room, then write an automation that ties them together and remember to change the sensor battery once a year.

The ZEN12 800LR does all of it from the switch itself. The built-in motion sensor detects movement up to 25 feet, and the lux sensor watches ambient brightness, so the lights come on when someone is actually there and when the room actually needs light. No extra sensors on the wall, no batteries to replace, and no multi-device automation to maintain.

Out of the box it turns lights on with motion and off after 30 seconds of inactivity. From there you can adjust motion sensitivity, auto-off delay, night mode brightness, the lux threshold, reporting intervals, and the LED indicator color and brightness.

Where it earns its place

This is a switch for the rooms you walk into with your hands full or your eyes half open.

• Bathrooms. Full brightness during the day, a dim setting overnight, so a 2 AM trip does not blind anyone.
• Hallways and stairways. Lights come up as you enter and fade out after the space clears, with no switch to find in the dark.
• Laundry rooms, pantries, and closets. Hands-free lighting for the rooms you enter carrying a basket and leave a minute later.
• Garages, basements, and utility spaces. Lights on when the door opens, off on their own, so they stop burning all afternoon.
• Rooms with good daylight. The lux reading holds the lights off when the sun is already doing the job.

Before you buy

A few things worth knowing up front, because we would rather you find out here than after the box is open.

This is a beta release. You may need to update the firmware on the device, and it may not be fully supported by your hub at the time of purchase. If you want something that works the moment it is paired, it is worth waiting for hub support to catch up. If you enjoy being early and do not mind a firmware update, you will be fine.

A neutral wire is required. Check your box before ordering. Older homes often do not have one.

A Z-Wave hub is required and sold separately.

Lighting loads only. Do not connect it to receptacles, motors, fans, fluorescent fixtures, or transformer-powered loads. Smart bulbs need Smart Bulb Mode rather than electrical dimming.
