Loved this, added a little extra magic to Christmas. Thanks team

A lovely idea that added some sparkle to the tree, got the kids interested in interactive toys and worked really well. Only issue was the wife getting a detached retina from rolling her eyes too much when it arrived. Oh well.

Almost there...

After playing with the stock software, I wanted to be able to have the tree lit without the music & add it to Home Assistant, so I opted to flash the ESPHome software. Unfortunately, several attempts left me with the "minimal" version of the software with few options. When I tried to manually change the yaml file to the h-1 software, it would compile but the error came up that it didn't have enough memory to upload the full version. I ran it with the minimal, figuring/hoping that a software update would come for the full version. It dropped from my network a few times and wouldn't reconnect, and we had enough going on that I shelved it. I hope to pull it out again in a week or two and see what I can do with it.

On a positive note, I won the h-1 in the drawing that Apollo Automation did with the guys at the Hometech.fm podcast, which was great of all of them. They also shipped it fast so I was able to get it before Christmas.

It has overall been a positive experience, and I hope to get the issues ironed out soon.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the H-1 and for your thoughtful review. We’re sorry to hear about the challenges you faced with flashing the ESPHome software and connectivity, but we’re glad to hear you’ve had some positive experiences with it as well!

Unfortunately, ESPHome released an update that caused our software to exceed the 100% flash limit of the ESP32 chip we use, which led to the issue you encountered. This update took us by surprise as well. Trevor has since fixed the firmware and created an H-1 minimal YAML file (https://github.com/ApolloAutomation/H-1/blob/main/Integrations/ESPHome/H-1_Minimal.yaml). He also made it easier to play songs by adding buttons directly in the Home Assistant device entities page. We recommend reflashing the device with the updated configuration to see if that resolves the issue. Additionally, if you are comfortable editing the YAML, you can remove the esp32_improv component, which should allow it to compile and work.

Did you happen to reach out to our support team? We’re happy to assist further to ensure you have the best possible experience with your H-1.

We’re so glad you won the drawing with Hometech.fm and appreciate your patience as you work through the setup. Thanks again for your support, and we look forward to helping you get the H-1 running just the way you’d like.

Best,
